Home service businesses miss the most calls exactly when it costs the most

September 8, 2026

Peak season should be the best time of year for an HVAC, plumbing, or electrical business — more calls, more jobs, more revenue. According to ServiceTitan's own industry benchmark data, it's also the season when the most calls go unanswered: 71% of HVAC companies report missing calls specifically during their busiest stretch of the year. The season that pays for the rest of the year is the same season a lot of that revenue is walking straight to voicemail.

Speed decides the job before the estimate does

ServiceTitan's Speed to Lead research found that 85% of homeowners hire whichever contractor responds to them first — not necessarily the best-reviewed one, not necessarily the cheapest one, just the first one who picks up or calls back. Response-time research across industries backs up why: the conversion advantage of a fast callback drops off within minutes, not hours. A missed call during peak season isn't a delayed job. For most of that 85%, it's a job that already went to whoever answered next.

Homeowners already want to skip the call

HomeAdvisor's consumer survey puts the number at 56% of homeowners who'd rather book a home service online than call. Jobber's own research goes further — 73% of homeowners say they'd rebook a contractor specifically because that contractor offers online scheduling. And yet, per Jobber's technology adoption survey, only 47% of contractors actually offer it. More than half the industry is asking homeowners to do the one thing more than half of them say they'd rather not do.

The hours nobody's covering

Housecall Pro's platform data puts 42% of home service bookings happening outside normal business hours — evenings, weekends, the hours nobody's staffing a phone line. That's not a small sliver of demand showing up at an inconvenient time. It's close to half of all bookings arriving when a phone-only business simply isn't open to take them.

What this actually calls for

None of this is really about HVAC, plumbing, or electrical work specifically — it's about dispatch. A technician-specific link, with job duration and drive-time buffer already built in, means a homeowner can book directly against real availability at 9pm on a Sunday instead of leaving a voicemail and hoping. A reminder before the job and a self-serve reschedule link mean a schedule change doesn't turn into another call tying up dispatch. And when a job like a seasonal HVAC tune-up or a routine inspection comes back around, the reminder can go out automatically instead of relying on someone remembering to follow up.

Cleaning, landscaping, repair, and install jobs each get their own duration and buffer — so a tech's day doesn't get overbooked by a generic calendar.
